Layn Wildfire is currently hiring for the 2025 fire season with bases in Kelowna and Victoria.

If you are a newly certified faller in your first 2 years, you can apply to be a Faller on a Type 2 Fire Crew. To be a contract faller you must have at a minimum 2 years’ experience falling to qualify. Type 2 Fire Crews are an experienced fire crew that consists of 4 people. 1 Crew Lead and 3 Crew members. Each 4 pack needs a Certified Faller to complete the crew. All individuals applying for a Type 2 Fire Crew must be minimum 19 years of age and have minimum 17 active fire line days in the past 3 years to qualify.

Falling Services Categories

Layn Wildfire is currently hiring for the 2025 fire season with faller bases in the Cariboo, Coast, Kamloops, Southeast and Prince George.

Requirements for a subcontractor:

  • Falling Certificate (CAGC, BCFSC, or BCWS)
  • Basic First Aid, formerly OFA 1(required by all fallers as of 2024)
  • S-100 Basic Fire Suppression or S-100A Annual Refresher  
  • S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • WorkSafe BC Clearance Letter (Not applicable for employees) 
  • APV47 (This is a vehicle insurance form- you’ll need 3rd party liability with at least 2 million coverage) 

Not essential, but an asset: 

  • Advanced First Aid, formerly OFA 3 
  • Danger Tree Assessor course, Fire Module (UNBC)
  • Falling Supervisor Certificate/ Qualification/ QFT/ QST(FallCo)
  • Hoist training (for class 1 faller

Requirements for Class 3 Faller:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified faller
  • 1 year of experience within the past 2 years in forestry activities work involving
    • Falling timber up to 28” and
    • Falling on slopes up to 45%
  • Knowledge of the BC Faller Training Standards

Gear List:

  • CSA Approved Hard Hat with Earmuffs and Face Shield
  • Work Gloves
  • Personal First Aid with 2 pressure bandages
  • Appropriate Footwear with coverage above the ankle
  • Non-synthetic or flame-resistant saw pants with a minimum TCS of 3600 fps
  • High-Visibility FR Shirt. Red is not allowed.
  • Handheld Radio Programmed with BCWS channels (colours, metallics, Fire A1-A3 and Fire B1-B3.
  • 4×4 pickup with appropriate load rated tires (Load “E”) and equipped with radio frequencies for road channels (RR’s) and the BCWS channels. A Commercial Vehicle Inspection decal is required for trucks older than 7 years. 
  • Day pack/Fire line pack
  • Camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, thermarest)
  • GPS or smartphone with Avenza
  • 2 saws that are at least 70cc with full wrap and a minimum 24″ bar
  • Axe, wedges, files etc…
  • Gas and oil with enough fuel for the day (combi’s are nice)
  • Field marking abilities (flagging tape or spray paint)
  • Falling signs/ Hard gates

 

Danger Tree Assessors are required to have:

  • Wildland Fire Safety Module Field Cards (FS 502 B)
  • Wildfire Danger Tree Assessment Field Cards (FS 502 C and/or FS 502D)
  • Flagging Tape
  • 4 Yellow/ Black No Work Zone
  • 6 Orange/ Black Danger Tree
  • Sharpies and pencils
  •  

 

Requirements for a Class 2 Faller

  • Minimum of 5 years falling experience averaging 80 days a year within the past 8 years
  • 2 years of falling experience within the past 5 years in forestry activities work involving: 
    Falling large diameter greater than 48” and,
    Falling on steep slopes greater than 45%
  • The ability to open up and conduct in stand falling
  • Knowledge of BC Faller Safety Standards
  • Experience in falling at remote worksites
  • Experience supervising other fallers
  • Fire experience of at least 20 day

Gear List:

  • CSA Approved Hard Hat with Earmuffs and Face Shield
  • Work Gloves

Requirements for a Class 1 Faller

  • A work history with Layn Wildfire where a minimum of 3 qualified supervisor inspections from within the past 8 months are available upon the provinces request
  • Minimum of 7 years falling experience averaging 100 days a year within the past 10 years
  • 2 years of falling experience within the past 5 years in forestry harvesting work involving: 
  • Falling heli, conventional or right of way
  • Falling large diameter greater than 48” and,
  •  Falling on steep slopes greater than 45%
  • The ability to open up and conduct complex in stand falling
  • Experience with complex danger trees
  • Experience in falling at remote worksites
  • Experience supervising other fallers
  • Hover Exit training and experience
  • Helipad construction experience
  • Fire experience of at least 50 days within the past 5 years

Gear List:

All Type 2 Crew members including fallers are required to complete a WFX Fitness test components can be found at CIFFC

Fallers on Type 2 Crews have an hourly “Deployed rate” and an hourly “Standby rate”. Crew Members/Leaders will be paid “Ticket Top Ups” as per designated ticket (Advanced First Aid, DTA, BCO, QF). A pay schedule will be discussed during the hiring process or upon request.

MANDATORY:

Layn will provide: 

  • FR uniform, 2 shirts, 2 pants that meet BCWS Standards.

Employees are required to provide: 

  • Hard Hat (preferably orange) with:
  • Chin strap for Hard Hat 
  •  Helmet Mounting Earmuffs (Peltors) CSA Standard Z94.2 for Hard Hat 
  • Face Shield/ Brush Screen for Hard Hat
  • Ear Plugs 
  • Fox 40 Whistle
  • Headlamp with batteries 
  • Leather Belt
  • Hi-Vis Vest 
  • Goggles or Safety Glasses
  • Leather Gloves (2 Pairs)
  • Pocket Knife 
  • Rain Gear 
  • Personal First Aid Kit with Pressure Bandage 
  • 24 Hour Food (3000 Cals/Person) 
  • Tent 
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping Pad / Thermarest

Most Firefighters prefer a light hiker, composite hard toe is okay, steel toe is not recommended. Some good boot brands are Canada West, Scarpa, Asolo, Zamblerlan, Viberg. 

RECOMMENDED ITEMS: 

  • Shampoo, Body Wash, Toothpaste/Brush, Towel, 
  • Tylenol, Advil, Baby Powder, Personal Medication  
  • Underwear, Socks, Swimsuit, Sweater/Sweatpants for camp
  • Crocs or Camp/Shower Shoe

*IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING*

  • It is a seasonal on-call position. Wildfire is not guaranteed work. Do not quit your day job for this position. Make arrangements with your current employer prior to being deployed to a fire.
  • Deployment length is 14 days inclusive of travel (New 2024).
  • Deployments can be shorter than 14 fire-line days if the province no longer requires the resource. 
  • Workdays are typically 12 hours but often go into over-time.
  • Food and Accommodation is covered by Layn Wildfire while deployed. 
  • It is unknown if you will be in a camp or motel.
  • It is not guaranteed that once you go into camp you will have access to cell service, stores or pharmacies. Set yourself up appropriately for this situation. Prescriptions, Cigarettes, etc.
