Structural Protection Fire Crews

Layn Wildfire is currently hiring for the 2025 fire season with bases in Kelowna and Victoria. 

What is a Structural Protection Fire Crew?

Structural Protection Fire Crews are an experienced fire crew that consists of 5 people. 1 Crew Lead and 4 Crew members. All individuals applying for a Structural Protection Fire Crew must have completed WSPP-115 and have a minimum of 20 fire line days. Structural Protection Crews primary scope is to set up sprinkler systems and protect communities from wildfires.

All Structural Protection Crew members must complete a moderate fitness test. The test
is a 3.3km speed walk in under 30 mins with a 25lb pack. No running allowed.

Structural Protection Crews have an hourly “Deployed Rate” and an hourly “Standby Rate”. Crew Members/Leaders will be paid “Ticket Top Ups” as per designated ticket(Basic First Aid, BCO). A pay schedule will be discussed during the hiring process or upon request.

MANDATORY:

Layn will provide: 

  • FR uniform, 2 shirts, 2 pants that meet BCWS Standards.

Employees are required to provide: 

  • Hard Hat (preferably orange) with:
  • Chin strap for Hard Hat 
  • Helmet Mounting Earmuffs (Peltors) CSA Standard Z94.2 for Hard Hat 
  • Face Shield/ Brush Screen for Hard Hat
  • Ear Plugs 
  • Fox 40 Whistle
  • Headlamp with batteries 
  • Leather Belt
  • Hi-Vis Vest 
  • Goggles or Safety Glasses
  • Leather Gloves (2 Pairs)
  • Pocket Knife 
  • Rain Gear 
  • Personal First Aid Kit with Pressure Bandage 
  • 24 Hour Food (3000 Cals/Person) 
  • Tent 
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping Pad / Thermarest
  • Wool sweater/ Stanfield 
  • Wristwatch 
  • Day Pack or Fire Line Pack 
  • Valid Driver License or Photo ID, Fire Tickets, OFA, DTA tickets. 
  • Hiking Boots (Vibram sole or equivalent, above the ankle coverage) 

Most Firefighters prefer a light hiker, composite hard toe is okay, steel toe is not recommended. Some good boot brands are Canada West, Scarpa, Asolo, Zamblerlan, Viberg. 

RECOMMENDED ITEMS: 

  • Shampoo, Body Wash, Toothpaste/Brush, Towel, 
  • Tylenol, Advil, Baby Powder, Personal Medication  
  • Underwear, Socks, Swimsuit, Sweater/Sweatpants for camp
  • Crocs or Camp/Shower Shoe

*IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING*

  • It is a seasonal on-call position. Wildfire is not guaranteed work. Do not quit your day job for this position. Make arrangements with your current employer prior to being deployed to a fire.
  • Deployment length is 14 days inclusive of travel (New 2024).
  • Deployments can be shorter than 14 fire-line days if the province no longer requires the resource. 
  • Workdays are typically 12 hours but often go into over-time.
  • Food and Accommodation is covered by Layn Wildfire while deployed. 
  • It is unknown if you will be in a camp or motel.
  • It is not guaranteed that once you go into camp you will have access to cell service, stores or pharmacies. Set yourself up appropriately for this situation. Prescriptions, Cigarettes, etc.
